Total back-to-school spending this year is estimated to reach $20.1 billion, a $1.7 billion increase over last year’s estimate, according to the National Retail Federation.

The average family with children in school will spend $594.24 on back-to-school purchases, compared with $563.49 last year, according to the Washington, D.C.-based organization’s survey of more than 8,300 respondents.

Parents will spend $151.61 on electronics during the back-to-school time frame, up from $129.24 last year. And most consumers (73 percent) will head to discount stores for shopping.

Spending on college goods, however, will drop 7 percent this year to $599.38 per person, with less spent on clothes and dorm furnishes.

“Though every college student wants the latest and greatest gadgets, students are being frugal this year,” said Phil Rist, vice president of strategy at BIGresearch, which conducted the survey. “While some may opt for a cheaper model, many students may take advantage of computer labs at school or a family computer at home instead of investing in one themselves.”

College bookstores also will suffer, with 41.8 percent of those surveyed planning to buy from those stores, down from 57.2 percent last year.

And more students are forgoing dorm life to live at home this year and save, with 54.1 percent of college students commuting to campus, up from 49.7 percent last year.
